Equal rights ramblings

Ok so I can’t begin to tell you how happy I am the Sandra Bullock won the award. Her movie “The Blind Side” was by far the best movie she has ever done. That being said it was high time she won.

So I have been spending a bit of time reading about women issues. I mean I am one and you would think that I would have cared about this before now. I guess when I was younger (in my 20’s) and just coming out I did care more. I think though that as I have gotten older I don’t think about it so much. Maybe part of the problem is that I work in an office of almost all men. There is one other woman in my office and we stick together. So I guess what I mean is that when you are around them all day you or at least I tend to forget that I am woman. Not that I think I am turning into a man, God knows I would not want that. I mean guys are ok but….yuck.

So anyway back to my reading up on women. I did not grow up in the bra burning age so don’t and have never felt like a feminist. I do believe that women should be treated like anyone else. I believe that we should be paid the same as men if we are as qualified. Maybe I should say I believe in all equality. Why should it matter a person’s age, sex, color, size, amount of hair, orientation, religion, or any other difference. If looking to hire someone would you not want the most qualified person. And if you have someone more qualified should they not get the pay based on that qualification. So having said all that why is it that women still are not treated as an equal. I know some women that make stellar salesperson and some guys who really suck so why are the treated differently. Why can’t we all just grow up and act human.

  1. Good blog. I came of age in the fifties. In that era most people believed "the man is the head of the house" and that women *should* try hard to be pleasing to them and make themselves attractive to them. That was their role. Evangelical Christians truly emphasized that.

Sixties feminists picked up the gauntlet of earlier woman's movements to proclaim as you do "women should be treated like anyone else. [W]e should be paid the same as men if we are as qualified." And they set the goal of full equality.

So I would say you're indeed an articulate feminist! And I applaud you.
